  • Slade, Status Quo, Lindisfarne and Caravan 1973

    Status Quo 1973

This was Status Quo’s first trek to Australia and New Zealand. It would become a regular trip during the 1970s but on this, their first tour, Quo played as support band to the UK glam rockers ‘Slade’. Quo would return to Australia within the year. The support act was Blackfeather.

Jands sound system was put to the test by Slade’s operator who took one look at the mixer and said “I don’t use the meters (or any of the other controls) just push all the faders to the top“. After the first show the DBX160 limiters were moved from the mix position to backstage and set to protect the speaker system!

“Todd (Hunter) … gathered some friends and fellow performers for an appearance at the Great Ngaruawahia Music Festival. They wrote original songs for their set list, and someone pulled the name “Dragon” out of an I Ching book. Their performance at the Ngaruawahia Music Festival led to a better gig, a few weeks performing at the Occidental Hotel in Auckland.”

  • Led Zeppelin Tour 1972

    Led Zeppelin – Sydney

This was Led Zeppelin’s only Australian tour. Portions of the Sydney Showground concert were filmed for GTK and appears in the “Down Under” segment of the Led Zeppelin DVD released in 2003.

    The Sun-Herald, 5 March 1972, p109

    By David D. Bryant
The Led Zeppelin concert at the showgrounds last Sunday must rate as one of the best ever held in Sydney – but, if the crowd had not stormed the fences, it could have been the worst.
The official attendence figure was 27,000 but senior police officers at the concert estimated the crowd at “at least 30,000”. According to showground officials the three stands used last Sunday have a maximum capacity of 25,000 – so whatever way you look at it the ground was dangerously overcrowded.
Despite the fact that there were no seats left at mid-day and no standing room by 1.30pm., people were still coming through the gates at 2.30pm. The overcrowding that existed before the fences were stormed must never be allowed to occur again because next time someone could be killed in the crush. Once capacity is reached the gates should be closed.
